About The Foundation

The Nechung Foundation is a Tibetan Buddhist temple and center for Tibetan culture, established with the blessing of H.H. the Dalai Lama and rooted in the tradition of the historic Nechung Monastery in Dharamsala, India. The Foundation is dedicated to preserving the unique cultural and spiritual heritage of Tibet and sharing it with the rest of the world. The Nechung Foundation is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit organization. Its lineage, its liturgy and the training of its clergy come from Nechung Monastery — home of the Chief State Oracle of Tibet, a spiritual institution that has guided the Tibetan people for centuries. The Venerable Thupten Ngodup, the Nechung Kuten, serves on the Foundation's board, and monks of the monastery travel from India to lead our annual Maha Guru Bumtsok. Nestled in the serene and picturesque landscape of Poughquag, NY, just a 1.5-hour drive from the bustling heart of New York City, the Nechung Foundation offers a peaceful retreat from the chaos of everyday life. Surrounded by tranquil forests and the natural beauty of upstate New York, the Foundation provides a sanctuary for both spiritual and communal well-being. At the Nechung Foundation, the day begins and ends with extensive prayers dedicated to the long life of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, continuing a tradition that has been upheld for generations. Our shrine room is open for worship, and our resident lama leads the daily prayers and the ceremonies of the Tibetan religious calendar throughout the year. For the Tibetan and Himalayan communities in the region, the Foundation is more than just a place of worship; it is a pillar of support during life's most challenging moments. When a loved one passes away, families come here to offer prayers, finding comfort and solace in the special ceremonies held for the deceased and the ailing. But the Nechung Foundation is not only a haven for those in mourning; it is also a cherished escape for city dwellers seeking respite from the noise and demands of urban life. Whether through participation in spiritual practices or simply enjoying the serene surroundings, visitors find a deep sense of peace and rejuvenation. The Nechung Foundation welcomes everyone with open arms, regardless of religious belief, sex, or race. Our doors are open to all who seek peace, understanding, and spiritual growth. We believe in the importance of serving all beings, and this mission is at the heart of everything we do. Whether you are a seasoned practitioner or someone simply curious about meditation, you are invited to join our meditation classes, where everyone can find a moment of stillness and reflection. At the Nechung Foundation, we strive to create an inclusive and nurturing environment where all individuals can come together in the spirit of compassion and community. A resident lama is always present at the Foundation, offering guidance, wisdom, and support to all who seek it. The Nechung Foundation is not just a place — it's a community, dedicated to preserving Tibetan spiritual traditions while fostering a space for healing, reflection, and connection.
